W. Andrew Harrell, Ph.D., J.D. (President)
  • Education.  B.A. (Pomona College); M.A., Ph.D. (University of Washington); J.D. (Northwestern California School of Law).

  • Publications.  More than 140 publications, principally in the areas of accident analysis, children's accidents, pedestrian behavior, shopping cart accidents, lifeguard behavior, warnings, child development, statistics and general social psychology. 
  • Prior Positions.  Professor of Human Factors and Statistics at the University of Alberta since 1971.  Director of the Small Groups Laboratory from 1971-1976.  Director of the Population Research Laboratory from 2004-2007. President of Harrell & Associates, Ltd.(1994-2008). 
  • Research experience. Dr. Harrell has worked extensively in the social sciences for more than 40 years.  He is internationally recognized for his research, particularly for his creativity in using non-traditional strategies to investigate significant scientific problems.  His work has been featured in hundreds of interviews on all of the major radio and television networks and newspapers.  For example, his work has been presented on popular news programs such as the View, ABC's 20/20, and Geraldo.
  • Expert Testimony.  Dr. Harrell has served as an expert witness in more than 14 states and 2 countries since 1991.  His cases are evenly split between plaintiff and defense. In assisting attorneys, he has performed observational studies, surveys, and field and laboratory tests.  Among his survey approaches, he has used random digit dialing telephone surveys, internet surveys, and mailed questionnaires.  Since every case is unique, requiring creativity and adaptability, Harrell & Associates has the expertise to meet these requirements.
  • Statistical knowledge.  Dr. Harrell has been trained and educated in sophisticated statistical analysis, and has taught university-level courses in this field for 37 years.  Such expertise is important for appreciating the limits of inference possible from data and critiquing the work of other experts.
  • Experienced working with lawyers. Dr. Harrell has worked for seventeen years as an expert, advising attorneys on a variety of cases. He is known for his clearly expressed, deliberated, and scientifically grounded opinions. 
  • Administrative experience. Dr. Harrell has successfully administered a major university survey research center and has dealt with a diversity of private, academic and governmental clients.  He has excelled in managing a large number of personnel to produce high quality and timely research. He knows how to work with marketing researchers, telephone call centers, experts in sampling and statistical analysis, and other professionals associated with successful surveys.
